SET, LIGHT and PROJECTION DESIGN
Assistant Projection Designer Caleb Gething Between the Lines is a heartfelt new musical that follows Delilah, a teenager who escapes the challenges of her everyday life by disappearing into the pages of her favorite fairy tale. When the story’s handsome prince suddenly begins speaking to her, Delilah finds herself caught between the real world and the one she has always dreamed of—discovering along the way the power of her own voice and imagination. For our design, we envisioned the entire story unfolding inside the New York Public Library, creating a unit set modeled after its iconic architecture. The director wanted a singular, versatile environment, and we leaned into a palette of rich blues to evoke calm, tranquility, and the ethereal quality of slipping between worlds. Projections became central to storytelling, appearing in three distinct forms: black-and-white silhouettes drawn as if from the book itself; vibrant, color illustrations with a stained-glass effect that echoed the library’s windows; and dynamic animations blending the two styles. Together, the set, projections, and lighting transformed the stage into a living book, seamlessly carrying the audience between reality and fantasy. |
