SET, LIGHT and PROJECTION DESIGN

Fun Home is a memory play that follows cartoonist Alison Bechdel as she reflects on her childhood, her coming of age, and her complex relationship with her father. Moving fluidly between past and present, the musical explores themes of family, identity, and truth with humor, poignancy, and emotional depth.
For my design concept, the set, lighting, and projections emerge as though drawn directly from Alison’s sketchbook—ideas spilling from the page onto the stage. Each moment feels like it is being created in real time from her mind, as she revisits the spaces of her life: the family’s funeral home, the house she grew up in, and the memories that shaped her. The visual world shifts and layers dynamically, mirroring the way memory and art intertwine, so that the act of storytelling itself becomes part of the theatrical landscape.
