SPAMALOT
Set Design

“Vandy Scoates (scenic design) and Lauren Pivirotto (costume design) achieved excellence in this production with diligent attention to detail. This was evident with strategically placed breasts throughout the scenery and attire ranging from medieval rags to glamorous showgirl sequences.

With my set design of Spamalot I wanted to pay homage to the artistic style of Terry Gilliam in order to capture the original Monty Python vigor while bringing in the stylistic elements of American musical theater and pop culture.  By utilizing the cartoon and cut-out style of Gilliam’s animation, I have accentuated the musical’s theatricality.  By keeping some of the iconic imagery found in Monty Python and the Holy Grail while adding a new layer humor more recognizable to the younger generations.

My set design achieved this through a fusion of medieval and contemporary imagery depicted on flat but exaggerated scenery pieces.  In addition I have used two-dimensional scenery paint treatments, three-dimensional props, and Gilliam infused projection animation to make the show accessible to those who have not seen the movie as well as those who regard the film as a cult classic.
